STROKE occurs when there is an interruption in the supply of blood to the brain. This leads to a shortage in supply of oxygen and nutrients to the brain, and the brain cells begin to die.
Approximately 40% of people worldwide who die from stroke are male, with 60% of deaths occurring in female.
Types of stroke
1. Hemorrhagic stroke: this is caused by a weakened vessel that ruptures and bleeds into the surrounding brain. The blood accumulates and compresses the surrounding brain tissue.
2. Ischemic stroke: this occurs when a vessel supplying blood to the brain is obstructed. It accounts for about 87% of all strokes.
