In an attempt to get rid of a tricycle operator, five men who were suspected of being thieves were set on fire and killed on Saturday night in Onitsha, Anambra State.
According to information obtained by NIGERIAN TRIBUNE, the incident happened on old Nkpor Road, near the People’s Club Onitsha headquarters.
According to a source, the males were caught after trying to take a tricycle from the owner in broad daylight.
The mob, which had gathered after the men had been hauled up, disregarded some people’s advice to call the police. The men were first stripped naked and beaten before being set ablaze with fuel-filled old tires that some people later brought.
Everyone looked on and kept an eye on the men as they burned to death today, the insider added.
Nevertheless, the Anambra State Police acknowledged the event through its spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, who said that it had taken place just before members of the command arrived at the location.
Before the police officers arrived at the scene at around 5:30 p.m., the suspects had already been set ablaze, according to Ikenga.
However, five different brands of mobile phones and a tricycle believed to have been taken by the lynched suspects were found by the operators.
He emphasized that people should always take suspects to police stations when they are apprehended in order to help the police conduct thorough investigations into the suspects’ activities and prosecute them in accordance with current laws. He said the command would continue to strongly condemn such acts.

Many robbers and small-time criminals are believed to have been slain or even burned alive by enraged mobs in Onitsha, a city known for its “jungle justice.”
Many think that turning over the suspect to
the police will just allow them to buy their way out and carry on terrorizing the populace.
