The Kenyan police are on a manhunt for a young Secondary School student who allegedly hammered a three-inch nail into the head of the principal of his school on Wednesday.

The suspect, a student of Ainamoi Secondary School in Kenya was reportedly sacked together with other students for owing school fees. The report says he owes the school an amount of 7,000 Kenyan Shillings, which is about 378 in Ghana cedis.

Angered by the decision by the principal to sack him from the school for owing fees, the suspect returned from his house with a three-inch nail which he hammered into the head of the principal, identified as Mr Rono.

According to the report published by biznakenya.com, an online Kenyan news portal, the principal acted in response to a directive by Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Education, that students who were owing fees should be sacked as he believes that parents were unwilling to pay the fees of their wards.

Unfortunately, this has landed the principal in this unfortunate incident. Reports also indicate that the suspect took to his heels after orchestrating this heinous crime and the police have since been on the lookout for him.

The ability to pay school fees is a major problem for many poor households across Africa. In Ghana, the government introduced a free SHS policy in 2017 to reduce the burden of parents and make education widely accessible to every citizen. Primary and Junior High School education has also been made free for the past two decades.
