Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are very common and can come with different symptoms. Although some people might not experience symptoms at all, it’s still important to know the signs that can be caused by STIs.

If not early treated, some STIs can lead to chronic damage to the body and be spread to other people via sexual contact.

According to “Mayo Clinic”, there are several ways to avoid or lower your risk of contracting Sexually Transmitted Infections. They include.

1. Stay with one uninfected partner

One of the reliable ways of preventing STIs is to stay in a long-term relationship in which both partners have intercourse only with each other and neither partner has sexually transmitted infections.

2. Wait and test

Avoid intercourse with new partners until you have both been tested for STIs. Oral intercourse is less risky, but use protection to prevent skin-to-skin contact between the oral and private organ mucous membranes.

3. Abstain

The most effective method to prevent STIs is to not have intimacy.

4. Get vaccinated

Getting vaccinated early, before intercourse exposure, is also effective in preventing some kinds of STIs. Vaccines are available to prevent human papillomavirus (HPV), hepatitis A and hepatitis B.

5. Use protection appropriately while having intercourse to prevent infection.

6. Communicate

Before any serious intercourse contact, communicate with your partner about practicing safer intimacy. Make sure you specifically agree on what activities will and won’t be alright.

7. Don’t drink alcohol in high amounts or use drugs. If you’re under the influence, you’re more likely to take intimacy risks.
