Causes
According to the publication by Healthline, the following are the causes of itching in the penile area;
GENITAL HERPES
This is caused by Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV), which can trigger pain and itching in the genital organ. The virus can lie dormant in the body for years.
LICHEN NITIDUS
It is an inflammation of the skin cells that causes itching and tiny bumps in different parts of the body, including the penile area.
CANDIDIASIS (MALE THRUSH)
This can develop on the head of the male organ. It causes itching and burning rash. A cheese like discharge may also occur.
GENITAL WARTS
These small bumps are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), an STD which causes itching. It can make bleeding occur during lovemaking.
LICHEN PLANUS AND PSORIASIS
This is an inflammatory condition that affects the hair, nails, and skin, including the male organ. It can cause itchy, flat-topped bumps or blisters.
Psoriasis is another chronic skin condition that can affect the penile area. It results in the accumulation of skin cells on the skin’s surface and causes itchy and red patches of scaly skin.
SCABIES
Scabies is a condition where tiny mites burrow underneath the skin’s surface. These mites tend to burrow into the folds of the skin including the area around the male genital organ.
CONTACT DERMATITIS
This is a rash that may develop on the penile area if you come in contact with allergens such as soaps, fragrances and fabric. It causes itching, dry skin and genital rash.
INGROWN HAIR
An ingrown hair at the base of the male organ can itch and produce a soft bump or a painful blister.
Other causes of itching in the penile area are as follows;
– Pubic lice
– Folliculitis
– Molluscum contagiosum, etc.
