A Junior Secondary School 2 pupil of Simple Faith Schools, Agbara, Lagos State, Emmanuel Amidu, has died at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Surulere. The victim’s father, Akinola Amidu, claimed that the 12-year-old was flogged by a teacher when he went to school on Thursday, May 12, 2022. The father said,
“I later learned that the whole thing started after their class teacher, Mr. Steven, beat the whole of his class for not completing their mathematics assignment.”
As a teacher, by all means, avoid hitting, flogging, or physically traumatizing a child. The outcome can range from just minor injuries to consequences as severe as neurogenic shock which can lead to sudden loss of life. When the worst scenario happens, one has to painfully live with its consequences. When copra punishment was being banned from modern education, these were the reasons for it.
Although it is very clear that the child probably had one or two sicknesses in his body but so unfortunate that he is gone. It could be a result of less technology without industrial gas causing diseases and sicknesses in both children and adults. Today we have a series of diseases without good drugs. Any child or adult you hit easily collapses. Teachers should be careful to avoid cases like this. People should also avoid fighting on the street because so many people are sick inside their bodies, the reason being that they do not go for a medical checkup. After all, all, it is expensive. Mind you, teachers, the Lagos state ministry of education has put an end to the beating of pupils and students in school.
