Revealed Early Signs and Symptoms of Syphilis Seen in Mouth, Tongue and Lips of a Patient
Syphilis is a s3xually transmitted disease caused by microaerophilic spirochete Treponema pallidum. After contact, Treponema pallidum infiltrates the genital or oral mucosa and spreads systemically throughout the blood and lymphatic systems.
Syphilis is classified into stages, with varying signs and symptoms associated with each stage. Primary syphilis has an incubation period of up to 90 days following the sexual transmission of Treponema pallidum and usually characterized by the development of chancres at the site of inoculation.
Although chancres are typically found on the genitalia, oral lesions are observed in a subset of patients who engage in oral love. These lesions appear as painless indurated ulcers on the tongue, gingiva, soft palate, or lips, associated with lymphadenopathy affecting the submandibular and cervical regions.
During this stage, the tongue of patient may appear reddish or brown, and sometimes white strains may be seen.
The eruption of a painless macular rash affecting the palms and soles indicates progression to the second stage of the infection and occurs approximately 4 to 10 weeks after the emergence of the primary chancre.
Scientific research indicates that rarely, primary syphilis presents in the tongue, which can mimic many other conditions that affect the oral cavity. In this article, we discuss a rare oral manifestation of primary syphilis.
However, medical doctors advice that a single injection of long-acting Benzathine penicillin G can be use to cure the early stages of syphilis.
This includes primary, secondary, or early latent syphilis. CDC recommends three doses of long-acting Benzathine penicillin G at weekly intervals for late latent syphilis or latent syphilis of unknown duration.
This treatment will cure the infection and prevent further damage, but it will not repair damage already done.
