The government of Ghana through the ministry of finance and the road ministry has abolished all road tolls in the country. Tolls are like a tax that applies only to the users of the toll road. Toll roads allow new roads to be built and maintained without raising taxes on the general public.
The 2022 budget was read on Wednesday, 17th November, 2021. The abolishment of the road tolls is set to take place today, 18th November, 2021.
The busiest toll booth in Ghana which is the Kasoa Toll booth seems to be a free place now. There is no traffic at the place. Drivers seem very happy about this government initiative.
The motive behind this abolishment is that, the toll booth does not give enough income as expected to the government. Government has therefore taxed mobile money transactions in the country. This is one key way for the government to get enough money from the country.
Hawkers at the Kasoa Toll booth seem to very disappointed in the government. In a video which is trending online, one woman seems to complain with what the government has done. According to her, the government should have informed the before. She is now worried about how she will get enough customers for her hawking business.
