Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) refers to a virus that weakens and damages the immune system. According to Healthline, when untreated, HIV affects and kills CD4 cells, which are also known as T cells. HIV is quite common in the world today, and it is majorly transmitted through body fluids, including blood, semen, vaginal and rectal fluids, and breast milk.

With there being no drug capable of eliminating it from the human body, HIV is a lifelong condition and when not managed, an individual with HIV may develop a much more serious condition known as Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). To avoid this, it becomes necessary to know certain warning signs of HIV that an affected person should watch out for.

Knowing and identifying these warning symptoms can help a person avoid the progression of HIV into AIDS. However, for the sake of this writeup, we would be looking at men-specific early-stage and later-stage warning signs and symptoms of HIV in men. This is particularly important because while the signs of HIV are almost the same for men and women, there are a few symptoms that are considered unique to men.

Early-stage HIV Symptoms

According to Healthline, in the early stage of HIV and specifically within 4 weeks of being infected, an infected person is said to have acute or primary HIV infection. At this stage, HIV would enter certain white blood cells in the person’s body and spread throughout the body. The chances of transmitting the virus to other people are high at this stage and flu-like symptoms may be experienced.

These early-stage flu-like HIV symptoms in men include the following:

1. Fever.

2. Headache.

3. Fatigue.

4. Sore throat.

5. Skin rash.

6. Swollen lymph glands.

7. Diarrhea.

8. Night sweats.

9. Aching muscles or joints.

10. Ulcers in the mouth.

Later-Stage HIV Symptoms

Once HIV spreads against a person’s immune system, its rate of spread becomes slower and at this stage, chronic or clinical latency is said to have been reached. This stage, according to Healthline, may last up to between 10 and 15 years, but people who take their antiretroviral medications regularly can stay in this stage for decades. What’s more, men who are at the chronic or clinical latency (later-stage) stage of HIV may not have any symptoms.

However, when symptoms do appear, they may include any of the following:

1. Low sex drive

According to Healthline, low sex drive is a major sign of hypogonadism, which implies the failure of a man’s testicles to make enough of the male sex hormone testosterone. Hypogonadism is tied to HIV and can also lead to erectile dysfunction, depression, fatigue, infertility, less hair growth on the body and face, and breast tissue growth.

2. Sores on the male private organ

Normally, one of the major signs of HIV is painful open sores which appear on the mouth or oesophagus. However, these sores may also appear on a man’s private organ or anus, with the sores often coming back or recurring.

3. Pain or burning sensation while urinating

Experiencing pain or burning sensation when urinating is not only specific to sexually transmitted infections like gonorrhoea or chlamydia alone but can also be a warning sign of HIV. It can lead to swelling of the prostate and may cause urinating more often than usual, pain during ejaculation, cloudy or bloody urine, and lower back, abdomen, or groin pain.

AIDS

Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) refers to the last stage of HIV, and this simply refers to the stage whereby the virus has caused serious damage to the immune system of an infected person, which, in turn, makes it impossible for the body to fight off the infections. Signs that may characterise AIDS include extreme fatigue, and diarrhoea that lasts for more than a week.
